SANAA, Dec. 22 (Saba) -Hadramawt is Yemen's largest governorate. It is also its wealthiest in terms of natural resources. Most of Yemen's remaining gas and oil reserves are located here.
Sanaa (Arabic: صَنْعَاء, Ṣanʿāʾ [sˤɑnʕaːʔ], Yemeni Arabic: [ˈsˤɑnʕɑ]; Old South Arabian: 𐩮𐩬𐩲𐩥 Ṣnʿw), also spelled Sanaʽa and Sana, is the capital and largest city in Yemen and the centre of Sanaa Governorate.
Set among well-watered canyons, deserts and towering mountains, the Hadramawt is Yemen's largest governorate. It is also its wealthiest in terms of natural resources.
The civil war began in September 2014 when Houthi forces took over the capital city Sanaa, which was followed by a rapid Houthi takeover of the government.
Yemen's ancient architecture is famous for its age and beauty—some buildings are more than 2,000 years old. Sunbaked stone blocks and bricks form structures that reach several stories high. The walled city of Shibam is representative of this architecture.
Despite its regional variations, saltah is considered to be the national dish of Yemen. The most common dishes consumed all over Yemen are made with rice and lamb. There are many ways of preparing lamb in Yemen. In general though, the lamb is usually bone-in large chunks.
It is highest in the rural part of the Amran governorate, where 71 % of the population is poor. Amran is followed by Shabwah and Al-Baida (60 %). The incidence of poverty is the lowest in the Al-Maharah and Sana'a City governorates.
The site of ancient Marib was largely abandoned during the 20th century. Although a small village remains, the multi-story mud-brick buildings of the historic city are largely in ruins. The modern town of Marib is about 3.5 kilometres (2.2 miles) north of the center of the ancient city.
Because of their prominence and prosperity, the states and societies of ancient Yemen were collectively called Arabia Felix in Latin, meaning "Happy Arabia." However, when the Romans occupied Egypt in the 1st century BC they made the Red Sea their primary avenue of commerce.
Sanaa is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, although an exact date for its establishment is unknown. According to Yemeni legend, it was founded by Shem, one of the three sons of Noah.
In Yemen the spoken language is Arabic and the written language is Arabic. The capital of Yemen is Sanaa and the population is 18,078,035 with a total Area of 527,970 kilometers squared.
The Yemeni Army has a total active strength of 66,700 troops. In 2001, Yemen's National Defense Council abolished the existing two-year compulsory military service, relying instead on volunteers to fill posts in the military and security forces.
The Saudi-led coalition has attacked the positions of the Houthi militia and loyalists of the former President of Yemen, Ali Abdullah Saleh, who are supported by Iran (see Iran–Saudi Arabia proxy conflict).
The Saudi-led coalition and the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels reached a UN-brokered cease-fire in April 2022; the cease-fire was renewed twice. Despite the official expiration of the cease-fire in October 2022, both sides have refrained from major escalatory actions and hostility levels remain low as of June 2023.

Many laws in Yemen are different to those in Australia, including for same-sex relationships, adultery and abandoning the Islamic religion. Punishment may include imprisonment and the death penalty.
Millions of children lack access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene services, and the country continues to experience regular outbreaks of cholera, measles, diphtheria and other vaccine-preventable diseases.
