With an AI, She Represents 38 Countries of the World As If They Were Women
In order to see how far artificial intelligence tools can go, many Internet users do not hesitate to be tempted by the exercise. Recently, it was precisely a surfer named Alexa, better known under the pseudonym Crypto Tea on Twitter, who wanted to represent countries as if they were women. These awesome images are generated by using artificial intelligence.
For this project, which seems to be a response to the initiative of the Internet user @jjonnyynnojj who represented 50 countries of the world as if they were humans (mostly men), Alexa used the AI tool Midjourney which allows creating images from text queries. But instead of communicating specific requests (called prompts) to get the desired result, she simply gave the AI simple formulations like “Brazilian woman, Brazilian landscape” changing only the names of the countries.
In the end, the young woman admitted to having been surprised by the quality of the images as well as the highlighting of certain characteristics specific to each country. Images shared on his Twitter feed in a thread that has gone viral with more than 40,000 interactions and 2.7 million views.
And it is no surprise that France is represented by a young woman with the Eiffel Tower in the background and bunches of grapes in a nod to the richness of its vineyards, while Mexico reveals a woman with makeup typical of the day of the Dead or even that the United States wears a cowboy hat, the flag of the country with the famous natural park of Monument Valley in the background.
As you have understood, artificial intelligence is forced to draw on the stereotypes of countries and even if we may not appreciate cultural prejudices, or find them too simplistic, we must admit that the quality of rendering and details is disturbing. . Generative AIs are not done talking about them!
