The Amazing Figurative Wooden Sculptures of the Artist Willy Verginer

Observing the meticulous and incredibly detailed sculptures of artist Willy Verginer, it seems difficult to imagine that they were carved out of wood, the illusion is so perfect.

Having grown up not far from the forests of Val Gardena in Italy, it goes without saying that it was from his childhood that the sculptor drew his interest in this material.

Although he was attracted to painting as a teenager, his passion for sculpture soon manifested itself to the point of making it a profession. Over the years, he has perfected his technique, starting with abstract wood carvings in a more figurative style, notably producing portraits of children, both miniature and oversized.

For each work, the sculptor uses large blocks of linden or pear wood on which he begins by cutting rough shapes with a chainsaw. He will then come to give them relief and detail them using adapted cutting tools resembling some of those used in the 1300s.

But the creative has more than one string to his bow and stands out widely in the artistic landscape thanks to the touches of bright colors he brings to his creations. It is a mastery that makes his sculptures all the more enigmatic and dreamlike while giving them an invaluable cachet.

Through his mostly committed works, he wishes to transmit his vision of the world but also to bring the spectators to reflect on the impact of their actions on a daily basis.
